As I sit here listening to the weather reports about a Nor’easter approaching I realize winter is coming! Fall is the time to prepare our immune systems for the season of colds and flu! Astragalus, Elderberry, and Echinacea are three great herbal choices for almost everyone! I take astragalus root tincture and drink astragalus root tea. In addition, I throw a few pieces of astragalus root into the pot whenever I make soups, stews, or sauces. It has a very mild flavor and really does not alter the flavor. Elderberry can be taken preventively or when under acute attack! It is a wonderful herb that even children enjoy. I take it regularly in the form of tincture or glycerite. Many herbal companies make elderberry glycerite which tastes great and is safe for children and a good choice for those who wish to avoid alcohol. Elderberry can also be made into a cough syrup, again very effective and great tasting! Elderberry is a really good herb to take if one does succumb to a cold or flu. It helps with coughs and reduces fevers. It gives a nice boost to the immune system helping to lessen symptoms and duration. Echinacea is also a great herb to use as soon as you start to feel something coming on! When taken correctly, Echinacea helps fight off colds and flu. Please make sure you are getting your tinctures from a reliable, reputable source. Dried herbs and roots have a fairly short shelf life and I wonder about the effectiveness of dried herbs that have been sitting in a shelf somewhere for too long.West Star Health and Healing makes a delicious tasting tea called High C Tonic Tea which is perfect to help prepare for the cold and flu season. It’s great served with a dollop of honey. We are happy to accommodate your herbal needs for the upcoming cold weather!
